NASA’s Earth-to-Space Call Set for Sep13, 2024: Sunita Williams to Share Star liner Mission Insights.
NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are set to make their first public address after the Boeing Starliner spacecraft’s recent empty return from its mission. The Earth-to-space call, scheduled for Friday, September 13, 2024, will be a live news conference from the International Space Station (ISS).
Williams and Wilmore have been aboard the ISS since their historic launch on Boeing’s Starliner on June 5, 2024. This mission was the first crewed flight of the Starliner, part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The spacecraft successfully docked with the ISS a day after launch, and since then, the astronauts have been engaged in vital scientific research, spacewalks, and technology demonstrations, showcasing the Starliner’s capabilities during its debut manned mission.
Wilmore and Williams were originally scheduled to spend just eight days aboard the ISS before returning on the Starliner. However, ongoing issues with the spacecraft extended their stay by months. On August 24, NASA announced that Starliner would return home without its crew, and instead, Williams and Wilmore will fly back on a SpaceX capsule, no earlier than February 2025. This means their planned eight-day mission will now stretch to at least 240 days.
Public Address Includes:
During the public address, the astronauts are expected to share their experiences on the ISS, insights into the Starliner’s performance, and details on its empty return—a pre-planned procedure to test the spacecraft’s systems. Williams and Wilmore will also likely discuss the significance of this mission, its role in the future of space exploration, and how the Starliner supports NASA’s long-term goals for sustainable space travel and deep space missions.
This event offers a unique chance for space enthusiasts to hear directly from the astronauts about their mission and the future of the Boeing Starliner. As part of NASA’s broader strategy to develop cost-effective transport systems for low Earth orbit and beyond, the Starliner’s first crewed flight marks a major milestone in human spaceflight.
